このゲームについて

Hell Is Other People is a different kind of horror game. One that doesn’t rely on monsters but on psychological and societal issues. A game where anxiety is your biggest enemy, you’ve got a constant nagging voice in your head that’s mean and paranoid, and the antagonists are not evil, but make your life hell either way, with their obsessive need for you to conform. A world where people are black & white and you’re a red-haired girl they view as broken and in need of fixing.

Your Mind is Your Inventory

Your inventory isn't filled with keys or crowbars. Instead, you collect Ideas. Concepts like Eye Contact, Humor, or Flattery become the tools you use to navigate the world.

Social Interaction

You use the ideas you collect to interact with The Others but it’s not always successful. Attempting to force eye contact mumbles the audio; trying to force a smile results in a creepy expression. Using the wrong idea causes The Others to become aggressive, volatile, or offended. When people break into synchronized hive-mind dances or bizarre body language rituals, you must mimic them to pass the test.

The Weight of Perception

Your ability to use these concepts is governed by three shifting mental states: ResilienceTrust, and Anxiety

Too many negative experiences like failed social interactions and too little positive ones bring these meters to critical levels that can paralyze the player, making them unable to speak for example, distort their perception, unlock different branches of the story, and ultimately lead to dark endings.

Surreal Puzzles

When things get too stressful, the protagonist faints. This passes time in the real world and transports the player into surreal horror puzzles to unlock the path forward. The player also sometimes enters a surreal magical happy Inner World, where solving puzzles raises the Resilience meter.

Three Realms

Gameplay shifts between:

  • The Real World - a black & white society. They are unable to see color and can’t perceive how or why the protagonist is different but they view her as broken. In return, they all look the same to the protagonist as she suffers from face blindness and can't distinguish between individuals.

  • The Nightmare World, which is a recreation of the day’s events with a nightmarish, surreal twist where all the protagonist's anxieties are allowed to roam free

  • The protagonist's happy, colorful Inner World where she retreats to raise her Resilience and lower her Anxiety scores

The Voice Within - An Unreliable Narrator

You aren't alone. An Alter Ego follows you around to amplify your fears and paranoia. Don't trust everything it says, and try to befriend it.

A Note From the Developer

This game is deeply personal. It's inspired by my own experiences as an anxious, over-thinking little girl trying to find connection and acceptance. Every frame of animation was hand-painted by me, every line of dialogue written from the heart, and every note of the soundtrack composed to capture what it felt like to experience that.
